Murder in Her Eyes started with a dream. A couple of them. One in which I had murdered my friend's wife. And had to act normally when he came over to my house. What it was like to know a horrible truth to a mystery tearing someone else apart. And another dream in which I desperately tried to hide a murder from the police. In the beginning of the dream, it was an accidental murder. As the dream went on, I realized it was one of a number of murders. And faced the dread of not only what I had done, but that it would eventually catch up to me. The terror of getting caught was worse than the realization of what I'd done. I don't think I captured the tension and terror of those nightmares here as this story actually took shape - it became more a story of our decisions haunting us, leading us from one bad choice to the next. A story wondering if it's possible to escape ourselves.
I wouldn't score this as my most innovative story or plot ever - it's more of a picture, a snapshot of a few days, and how the past led to these events. From a narrative perspective, and in terms of voice, I think it's some of my best writing, though.
