Crime in a Coffin Factory!
Seeing Crows my first release, but actually my second attempt at writing a novel. Deep Dark House was the first, which I wrote while working at the coffin factory that is such an important setting for Seeing Crows. The characters - and the story and the events - in Seeing Crows are fiction, of course. But the coffin factory is real! The novel was originally called Eating Crow, but someone else released a novel with that title before me - a theme that recurs with all of my releases. Much like with Deep Dark House, John Barth's The End Of The Road was a huge influence, playing with ideas of moral complexity - and complicity. I wanted a narrator that readers could easily project themselves onto, and see how far they could go along with the narrator's increasingly bad decisions. Another big influence was Feast of Snakes, by Harry Crews, especially on the characters and the setting. The setting, of course, is real - and I wanted to use setting almost like a character - how where these individuals lived and worked made them the people they are. And of course, there's the dark humor ...
